DEMOCRACY SHOULD PREVAIL IN SAME SEX MARRIAGE!!

Ever since the ultra catholic nation of Ireland voted in favour of same sex marriage, the media and politicians in Australia have been pushing their rhetoric of same sex marriage. Every day the media have been publishing articles on this issue and the Australian Labor Party are using this to gain some political mileage. Given this, one would think this is the most important issue the Government faces, it appears that the ever increasing government debt, increased pressures on standard of living and the growing threat of terrorism is just a minor blip in this society we live in.

The issue of same sex marriage is contentious, and so it should. Marriage has always been a religious institution between a man and a woman nevertheless the state, (Government) passed the Marriage Act in 1961 and this is where the problem started. In 2004 it was then amended to define marriage as:

Marriage means the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.

Certain unions are not marriages. A union solemnised in a foreign country between: (a) a man and another man; or (b) a woman and another woman; must not be recognised as a marriage in Australia

The problem for the religious right and their argument is that they allowed the state to legislate. When you allow politicians to legislate something on moral issues you can bet your life that future politicians will tweak it to suit the popular vote of the day.

On both sides of politics you have politicians politicising this issue, and this is not fair on those who oppose same sex marriage and it gives false hope for those who support change. As we do live in a democratic nation, the people, for the people, should deal with this issue.

We often hear people say politicians should represent the people who vote for them, and this is true, therefore you should expect politicians in safe conservative seats or politicians in seats, which have an influential number of migrants who have strong religious ties, vote conservatively. Likewise members of parliament in trendy inner city areas whose views lean to the left of the political spectrum would likely to vote in favour of same sex marriage. Given this array of inequality representation of Parliament, it should be put to a national plebiscite vote.

A controversial issue such as same sex marriage should be decided by the people because it is just that, controversial. If the majority of Australian people vote in favour of same sex marriage it will allow those who oppose it some time to accept it without much doubt. At the moment, with a Parliamentary vote we are already seeing some Senators and media personalities saying ‘what about the silent majority?’ A plebiscite vote will alleviate this issue.

Is the Government softening their position on illegal migration??

After reading online news today, I was bemused at how Immigration Minister appears to be softening his approach to Illegal Immigration in Australia. The Minister has confirmed that 150 Tamil asylum seekers and seven other people held on a customs ship will be transferred to the Australian mainland. According to Sky News the Minister stated that those who can return must be returned. The question lies though, has the Minister gone soft?

It’s not the first time this week the Minister has appeared soft, he has backflipped and provided a permanent visa to a 15 year old Ethiopian boy. Such backflips will be damaging for the Government as Border Protection is a policy which is supported by majority of Australian’s and was one of the major election issues which got the Liberal-National Parties elected to Government. A lack of direction in this area creates a vacuum for extreme minor parties such as One Nation, Australian Protectionist Party and Family First to gain some political momentum.

But why??

The Government in my opinion does want to send a clear message to people smugglers that Australia no longer has open borders and that the adults are in charge. In regards to the 150 Tamil asylum seekers, the Minister, according to Sky News, ruled out that they (asylum seekers) will be resettled in Australia. This confirms that the Government is continuing it’s tough stance and is attempting to deter people from getting on the boat to make that dangerous trip to Australia. The problem however lies with the Judiciary. An unelected body making decision on national sovereignty. Whilst I do support the Constitutions Separation of Powers, I am wary of the judiciary making decisions that affect national interests. With this in mind, the Government must abide by decisions made by the judiciary otherwise this will give the left more ammunition in the courts.

After many hours of contemplation, I have come to the reasoning that the Government isn’t going soft on this issue, they are merely appeasing the judiciary to ensure that they are not open to any form of litigation by the left. The Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison is doing a fantastic job and should be applauded for his efforts.

Selling off Millers Point to save thousands!

The emotive claptrap coming from the left and those living in taxpayer apartments in Millers Point that are soon to be sold off under the NSW Liberal National Government serves no purpose to those thousands on the waiting list for taxpayer funded accommodation. Community Services Minister Pru Goward made an announcement last week to sell off some taxpayer funded dwellings in order to save several million dollars which could be spent on more housing in other suburbs.
There are approximately 57,000 families on the waiting list for taxpayer funded housing in NSW, the sale of these dwellings will be able to alleviate some of this pressure. The Labor Party in their infinite wisdom are siding with the residents, yet when they were in government they too sold off some Miller Point homes; but the hypocrisy from the Labor Party should not come to any surprise. The ALP as usual are an emotive party that prey on vulnerable people and use them like toilet paper – if the ALP did care about the homeless they would support the sale of these houses and apartments in millers point.
